International Lecture Series at Polytechnic University of the Philippines Explores "Urban Community

September 16, 2023

Manila, Philippines - The Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Architecture and Built Design recently hosted an enlightening International Lecture Series on Urban Community Planning, featuring guest lecturers from the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Amikon Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Held on September 16, 2023, this event drew architecture students from across the institution eager to gain insights from esteemed guest lecturers. The distinguished speakers for the day were Architect Gardya Bidari Adninda and Architect Rhisa Aidilla Suprapto, both hailing from the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Amikon Yogyakarta.

The International Lecture Series serves as a platform for PUP students to engage with experts in the fields of architecture, urban planning, and design. This year's theme, "Urban Community Planning," was particularly pertinent given the rapid urbanization taking place not only in the Philippines but also across the globe. The lecture aimed to shed light on sustainable and innovative approaches to address the challenges faced by urban communities.

Architect Adninda and Architect Suprapto, whose innovative work has garnered accolades for its integration of cultural sensitivity and modern urban solutions, delivered an engaging presentation on "Cultural Preservation in Urban Spaces." The lecture series proved to be an invaluable opportunity for PUP's architecture students to interact with and learn from these luminaries in the field. The attendees were captivated by the interactive presentations and found themselves inspired to approach urban planning with fresh perspectives.

Together with EnP. Ibylou Golla, Officer-in-charge Dean of the College of Architecture and Built Design, Ar. Sarah Jane S. Pahimnayan-Pagador and Dr. Jocelyn A. Rivera-Lutap expressed their gratitude to the guest lecturers and underscored the importance of such exchanges in shaping the education and outlook of future architects.

“Ar. Gardyas Adninda and Ar. Rhisa Suprapto, two faculty members of the University of Amikom Yogyakarta, Indonesia, visited the College last Saturday, September 16, to give us an insightful lecture on post-disaster settlements, some architectural, and urban planning concepts which are extremely valuable for those currently conducting their architectural thesis, like me, as well as those that are to take the Research Management for Architecture (RMA) course. The two foreign lecturers were incredibly enthusiastic to share some norms in their country to contextualize how the world of Indonesian architecture is moving at [the] present time. They ensured that their lecture would be open and interactive by allowing students to participate and asking them questions in exchange for prizes. The importance of institutions and the public in making architectural projects successful was also highlighted. I, through the help of the Dean’s Office, entertained the two Indonesian architects, assisted in recording the attendance, and ensured [the] smooth facilitation of participants in the venue.

As the President of CADBE Research and Innovation Club, I am extremely looking forward to events like these, especially with lectures like that of Ar. Ninda’s and Ar. Rhisa’s. Even with such a short time, active cross-country dialogues in the built environment were already able to successfully happen between the lecturers and students. We are hoping that more visiting professors from other countries will visit the College so that our students will have the opportunity to have a glimpse of the global built environment scene,” remarked by Mr. Benedict Castillo, President of an organization PUP CADBE Research and Innovation’s Club.

The event was a testament to the power of global collaboration in advancing the field of architecture and urban planning. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Architecture and Built Design looks forward to continuing its tradition of hosting such enriching events that broaden the horizons of its students and faculty.
