Bearing the theme, “How to Get Away with your Freshman Year”, The Freehand launches its Excelencia 2020 via Facebook livestreaming and Zoom video conference today, October 10.
Excelencia 2020 is a 1-day webinar that focused on helping and guiding the freshmen by giving them tips and tricks on how to survive their journeys in becoming an architect.
Guest speakers IDr. Carmela Solomon and IDr. Van Damme Longino shared their professional experiences, college struggle, and memories of how they survived architecture school. They also gave tips for students as they embark on online learning.
With combined experience in the course, IDr. Solomon and IDr. Longino said that it is okay to not be knowledgeable at the start as one could learn from a lot of people at school and in the profession regarding this field of knowledge.
Moreover, they also mentioned the advantages and disadvantages they can foresee in learning under the new normal and gave tips on how to combat these.
They also answered questions on procrastinating and social life. IDr. Longino said that he did not procrastinate when he was in college to rest for the remaining days of his free time, while IDr. Solomon revealed that they made most of their time hanging out and doing plates together as a form of bonding.
Meanwhile, the second speaker Ms. Paula Mae Egar shared the differences in high school and college and gave tips on how to be efficient in studying. Egar is currently taking her review lessons before she proceeds to take the Architecture Licensure Examination.
In her talk, she declared that instead of thinking out of the box, students should “think out of the book”, as college is now more complex and spoon-feeding information is no longer tolerated.
She also advised students to ready themselves in exposure to various ideologies from different school organizations, but still be able to filter them out and find the right group that will help one grow.
“Instead of worrying and casting anxiety I should’ve have used the time in creating ideas and explore more on ideas instead of being afraid, I encourage you to generate your own ideas, I wish I spent more time in improving myself than proving myself to others and lastly, if you feel like giving up try to think again what is the reason why you are here and why you are doing this,” she added.
Before ending Egar shared a Bible verse that kept her going, 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
The program was attended by 82 participants in the zoom meeting and 814 views in the live stream. It ended with the music of PUP Hymn giving the freshman’s a warm welcome for their new journey in Sintang Paaralan. –Kylene Kaye Pangilinan/The Freehand News
