Every month electricity prices rise, and it's a pain in the neck for consumers, from P9.9472/kWh last November 2022 to P10.2769/kWh this December 2022. With the charge increase, a household with at least 200 kWh expended will have to pay an additional 66 Pesos (Gomez, 2022).
A lot of Filipino households tried to lower their bills by investing in solar panels even with its high cost. Now, companies and scientists have invented more sustainable solar panels: Biopanels and Transparent Solar Panels. Let's take a look!
The 23-year-old Mexican biotechnologist Adán Ramirez Sánchez invented Biopanel inspired by Splitterwerk Architects’ Algae building. It is a multipurpose system powered by microalgae and nanotechnology. The device uses photosynthesis; it takes and absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) to generate oxygen, and also produces clean energy at the same time.
“Our patented technology, the Intelligent Solar Biopanel is a unique multipurpose system in the world, which is based on the use of microalgae and nanotechnology, generating energy while cleaning the air, providing an avant-garde design that allows take advantage of the buildings facades and regulate their temperature, generating you greater energy savings” (Greenfluidics, 2021).
The unique technology of the Biopanel of Sanchez’ Greenfluidics can save 90kWh/m2 per year and can generate up to 328 kWh/m2 per year. Besides, it supplies continuous oxygen by mitigating 200 kg of carbon dioxide yearly. Ergo, these solar panels will address the world’s climate change.
Next up, the transparent solar panel! It’s beyond belief, but it’s real. The technology behind it is called photovoltaic glass. In 2014, researchers from Michigan State University (MSU) invented a concentrator that converts glass sheets into photovoltaic cells. It can capture UV and infrared light wavelengths regardless of the solar panels’ angle. Also, light can pass through up to 80%.
Breaking through the typical solar panel, new inventions above mentioned have dual purpose for a greener and better future, plus lower bills EYY!
