Interior design wasn't thought to have a huge impact on a person's life, but the truth is that it has probably played a major role in many aspects of their daily lives. I, as an Interior design student, wasn’t even aware of what the course entails. I just took it because that is what the university offered me. But as I go through the journey of being an ID student, I am grateful to have this opportunity to share my thoughts and experiences about interior design and how a person or a student should still consider it as their option in university. For sure, architecture is a great choice, it always has been. But what about interior design? Should one pursue it as his/her future career? Is it worth it? What are the similarities and differences between architecture and interior designing?
As for myself, I see profound beauty in designing and making the most of the spaces. Letting our freedom and creativity surround the place with careful planning and consideration. Whether it is an exceptionally gracious dinner at a friend's house or one of one's favorite stores, interior design can make spaces more compelling and amplify people's experiences in them. It also helps lift our spirits and optimize spaces in our homes, thereby making the most of the available space. The only thing that may be grueling and backbreaking for me as a student is that it’s not just about decorating. Interior design involves designing and decorating a room. People can pick out chairs, sofas, paint for the wall, and more. But you have to be different as an interior design student. People are hiring interior designers because they want something from their creative thoughts. And it could be draining at times. People's tastes are relative. We, as aspiring interior designers, also have to compromise and set aside our preferences because it is the client’s room that we are designing, not ours. One more thing is that I rarely had enough sleep. I’d be grateful for just having three hours of sleep, especially since I am not good at managing time. So much work, so little time. Notwithstanding all these hardships of being an ID student (college student), I still enjoy it. I still feel satisfaction and gratification.
According to the Dream Zone (School of creative studies), interior design is not just about beauty and aesthetics, added to it the career also showcases even a studio apartment as a residence that has enough space with the help of proper design and comforting lighting (June 2014). It is the designers' specialty to create more spaces, enhance the efficiency of spaces, improve each space's functional use, enhance the lighting, color, texture, pattern, scale, and size. Their expertise also extends to fittings and equipment selection. To be precise, it is all about transforming people’s lives and making their life better. Ergo, interior design is more important than it seems. Buildings are designed, reviewed, and overseen by architects. It is his/her primary objective to construct a structure that is functional, structurally strong, and aesthetically pleasing. Moreover, he/she must be able to analyze and solve problems. Architects plan and construct the building. The designer is responsible for creating the desired look/mood/feel of the building. Architects focus on a variety of technical aspects, such as the form, direction, and material of a building. A designer pays close attention to factors such as human needs, function, and aesthetics.
At the end of the day, it is still a matter of choice. A career in interior design is perfect if you enjoy design and bringing out the best in a space. It is a creative and challenging discipline you will never get bored with. Considering the increasing population and the resulting scarcity of space, people are reflecting on the possibility of designing confined spaces. The idea of designing interior spaces, of filling a blank space with vibrant colors, contrasts, and functionality, has always fascinated me. Choosing interior design has provided me with tremendous opportunities to express myself artistically, use the peak of my imagination, and propose inventive ideas in design on a usual basis.
