DECEMBER – for most, a month where winter creeps and bites on skin to give the chills, the first week marking the nearing of the yuletide season, a month of learning the beauty of giving. For some, it’s a month of warmth, a month of receiving a week-long break to commemorate and appreciate architecture and a break from all stress-inducing factors of college life.
For architecture students, the first week of December marks a week ‘NAW’t worth forgetting.
Two years ago marks the 2018 NAW event, two years ago marks the day of architecture students marching and enjoying the thrill of shouting for each other’s teams, and two years ago marks a night worth remembering as the highlights of events were brought to light, and everyone participated, bringing life to the said event’s theme – which is astrological science – and defying limits as they unleash their creativity, potential, and competitive inner selves.
Like every other event, NAW, as one of the most anticipated events by architecture students in the academic year, was meant to be prepared as early as possible. What with all the “Actually, when planning a big event like NAW, as soon as elected na yung officers, napag-uusapan at nagp-plan na agad kami ng NAW kasi madaming kailangan i-prepare. Bale by October, nafinalize na namin yung event,” Dawn Carillo stated, Treasurer of UAPSA PUP chapter. And based off from how magical the event turned out, all the planning, the stress, and the brainstorming were worth it.
Before the theme of the event was finalized, there were some ideas that were suggested, a lot of themes that were put in a voting poll for the student body. Luckily, what happened in the poll is astrological science, which also aligns with the then-current term’s theme, “Defying Limits”
“Maraming nag pitch-in ng ideas, merong Philippine Mythology, Philippine Festivals, Pinoy Superheroes, ganun. Hahaha! And nanalo sa voting yung Astrological Science since yung universe ay sobrang lawak and almost like infinite, like our term’s official theme ‘Defying limits,’ as said by Dawn Carillo, UAPSA PUP Treasurer.
NAW 2018 was a magical event, seemingly grandiose but not, and it was proven as students of four teams – simoy, siklab, agos and yanig – kept cheering in support of their own house and their own representative. It was a lot of hot stuff combined into a week-long program, including the LDP, Arkistilo, Ayycons, Academic and Non-academic quiz bees, E-sports, and the annual seminar held for architecture students.
Of course, NAW wouldn’t be complete without the highlight of the big night – Arkistilo, the segment for unleashing the creativity inside students, wherein candidates from each teams showcased their designs as they walk on the runway, parading their creations with a proud CAFAtid walk. It was one of the best moments that happened on the big night, the glitter in the highlight, the cherry on top of the event.
“For me, the most memorable part ng NAW ay yung Arkistilo talaga. Every section poured their time and effort creating these beautiful pieces. Magastos siya, pero worth it talaga kapag nakita mo yung representative ng class niyo walking on the runway. Lahat magaganda talaga kaya nahihirapan din pumili ang judges ng winners,” Dawn Carillo stated.
There were some minor technical issues, but the anticipated night went successful, all because of the people behind the planning and finalizing the event for the student body. “I wish we had more time preparing yung certificates and awards. We prepared early pero dahil mabagal yung magprint yung printer, ayon nagkaron kami doon. Minor problem lang yung printer pero minsan etong mga minors pa yung nakakasira ng event.”
Trying to survive in college is no denying a hard thing to do, we all sweat and try to get the most of our nights trying to survive and hold on tight to that line that keeps us moving despite hardships. Being an architecture student is harder, and as we celebrate the National Architecture Week and have these events, it’s beautiful how the student body unites and becomes a family, just breathing in the enjoyment of the night, and celebrating the art of architecture.
